Saint Attracta’s Boys Claim Junior Title
Our Junior Boys finished off the 2017 football season in great style following a 5-07 to 2-07 victory over Saint Damien’s NS, Perrystown in the final of the South Dublin Junior Football Competition on Tuesday, 07 November. The match was played in cold but pleasant conditions at Broadford and both teams served up a very entertaining and competitive game of football. St. Attracta’s got off to a sluggish start after the concession of an early goal but any pre-match nerves were soon settled through a well-taken goal from James Bates.
This score inspired the team into action and with James Bates and Eoin Campion beginning to dominate around the middle, St. Attracta’s enjoyed a purple patch which yielded some excellent scores. Alex O’ Mahony found the net mid-way through the half following good defensive work from Darragh Fox. The Attracta’s forward line continued to cause all sorts of problems for the St. Damien’s defence with some clever lines of running and good link play. Alex O’ Mahony raised another green flag in the fourteenth minute and further points from Adam Bates, Ruairí Fox (free), James Bates and another from the trustee left boot of O’ Mahony stretched the lead for St. Attracta’s. They endured a nervy finish to the half, however, leaking two late scores and it took some resolute and courageous defending by Andrew Gardener and his defensive colleagues to prevent the concession of a second goal. St. Attracta’s went in at the break with a 3-04 to 1-04 lead.
H-T Score: St. Attracta’s 3-04 Saint Damien’s 1-04
St. Damien’s were the first to register a point after the resumption. St. Attracta’s created some great scoring opportunities in this period of the game but three consecutive wides from Attracta’s meant that the game remained very much in the melting pot. James Bates settled his team once more with a free skilfully driven over with the outside of his right boot. Two minutes later the aforementioned Bates went on a penetrating solo run through the heart of the St. Damien’s defence and unleashed a terrific shot to land his second goal of the game. This gave St. Attracta’s a commanding lead entering the final quarter of the game. Saint Damien’s refused to give up and scored a late consolation goal which was just rewards for their efforts. St. Attracta’s, however, were not to be denied and a fabulous individual goal by Eoin Campion proved to be the insurance score. Late points from Alex O’ Mahony and Cian Byrne put the icing on an outstanding team performance.
This marks Saint Attracta’s first success in the competition since winning the title in 2014 and it certainly bodes well for the future. Congrats to all the forty-six boys who featured throughout the campaign and trained with such enthusiasm since September. Many thanks to parents for their continued support and to teachers Mr. Coughlan, Mr. Maguire, Mr. Kenny and Mr. Bradley for their commitment throughout the year.
